Joining the Freeze Yer Buns Challenge

We're still keeping our thermostat low, although we did finally have to turn the heat on a few weeks ago. The thermostat is set to 60 at night and during most of the day, and 64 in the mornings for a couple of hours to help everyone get up and get moving. We are also keeping the back rooms shut during the day to keep most of the heat in the living areas.

I realized how much colder our temps are right now when I made kefir this week and had to set the jug in a pan of warm water for a few hours to get it to culture! It usually takes about 8 hours to work, but it took nearly 24 hours this time. I'll start it off in the warm water next week.

I'm using my favorite fluffy warm shawls a lot more, but other than that haven't noticed much difference. It helps if you adjust gradually as the season progresses.

just a thought ~ we heat our house soley with a woodstove ~ we get the wood from the dump, cut it to size, & the whole family helps out. We like to get the wood from the dump, since it is free, and also recycles it usefully, plus it's very healthy for the kids to get involved with. (they help out with loading it, and stacking it after it's been cut, plus we all take turns going out to get wood and building the fires from time to time as well.)
And as for the woodstove, we actually got to count that as a tax deduction for 4 or 5 yrs. The stove is the newest catalytic type, and I think we spent about $2000 on it all told, (about 10 yrs ago, installed it ourselves). It literally paid for itself within the first year. We have a 3000 squ.ft. house, with both basement and 2nd story, and it heats the house very nicely. In fact, sometimes it gets just plain HOT ~
Anyway, we do have to bundle up in the mornings, I'll not lie about that, but the house never gets under 60 F, even if the fire does go out in the night, and it's -15 F outside.
Just a thought, if you are interested in saving energy and all. *the things that are possible in potatoland* :-D
